Government Solar Schemes in India
The Government of India has introduced several initiatives to make solar power more affordable and accessible for both residential and commercial users. These schemes provide subsidies, incentives, and policy support, encouraging citizens and businesses to adopt renewable energy.
1. Residential Solar Scheme
Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana
Objective:
The scheme is designed to help households reduce their dependence on grid electricity by installing rooftop solar systems. Beneficiaries can generate their own clean energy and enjoy up to 300 units of free electricity every month, directly lowering monthly expenses.
Subsidy Benefits:
- Residential Users: Eligible for Central Financial Assistance (CFA) under the scheme
Up to ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW of capacity
₹18,000 per kW for the next 1 kW (up to 3 kW in total)
Maximum subsidy of ₹78,000 for systems above 3 kW
Who Can Apply?
Any residential consumer with a valid electricity connection and sufficient rooftop space for solar installation is eligible.

2. Commercial & Industrial Solar Scheme
National Rooftop Solar Programme (Phase-II)
Objective:
This programme aims to expand rooftop solar adoption across offices, factories, and institutions. The goal is to reduce reliance on conventional power, lower energy bills, and accelerate India’s transition to renewable energy.
Schemes:
Commercial & Industrial Units: Though not covered under CFA, they can take advantage of net metering and various state-level incentives that improve project feasibility and returns

Commercial buildings, and industrial establishments with suitable rooftop space for solar installation.
